What Attracts Spiders to Your Home?
Worried about attracting spiders to your home, even in winter?
In this article, we’ll talk about the things you’re doing that may attract spiders into your home and how the team at Sun Dry can help.
Things that Attract Spiders
We’ve talked about what attracts redback spiders to your home here, but what about other species of this pesky insect? In this section, we’ll break down some of the things they love.
Heat
All spiders – whether it’s Huntsmen, daddy long legs or another species – love warmth. So it makes sense that they will try and make their way inside your home out of the cold during winter.
Food
Most insects seem to be attracted to uncovered food sources but spiders are something of an anomaly in this area.
That said, you should still make sure you cover up any leftovers after you finish your meals – especially sugary foods – as other insects are attracted to it and these are a spider’s favourite prey.
Dark Spaces
Spiders love to hide in dark spaces or nooks and crannies. As such, you should ensure that all gaps and entryways they can use to find their way into your house during winter – including windows and doors or cracks – are sealed.
Light
Spiders themselves aren’t necessarily attracted to light but they do love to eat the insects that are attracted to it. They especially love
Rubbish
Are you in the habit of letting your rubbish pile up before taking it to the bin? You may be attracting spiders as they love a good garbage rummage.
Other Spiders or Insects
When discussing sugary foods and light, we did mention that spiders will be drawn to places other insects are drawn to. It’s easy hunting for them.
They are also inclined to eat other spiders, so this is something to be on the lookout for.
Furniture or Children’s Toys
Spiders are always on the lookout for shelter, and some of the best places for them to shelter is in or around children’s toys and furniture. You’re particularly likely to find them hiding in these places if it is outside or second hand.
Plants & Firewood
Arachnids love to hide in plants and firewood. If you bring these things into your home – whether in the winter months or during summer – you’ll want to be extra careful.
