Checking the Worn Carpet Carpet in Your New Home
Buying a new home is exciting and stressful. When we’re at an open home we rush about trying to imagine ourselves and our family living in the space. One of the things that could be overlooked is the state of the carpet. Replacing carpet can be an expense you haven’t bargained for, so we at Sun Dry Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control put together a handy list of things to look out for when you’re thinking of buying a house.
Bad Odours
Does the carpet smell bad? This is usually caused by either pet odours or mould. Either way, it can be treated by Sun Dry Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control. If the carpet is in otherwise good condition, our experts can treat the problem even if they have to replace the underlay and seal the sub-floor.
Pests
Check the carpet under windows, along the edges of the room and in the corners for loosened or missing pile. This usually indicates carpet beetles or moths and the damage they cause is permanent. If the damage isn’t bad enough for you to think about replacing the carpet, be sure that you call a pest control expert as soon as you get the keys to your new house.
Wrinkles & Crinkles
Is the carpet wrinkled and loose? Does it make a crinkly sound as you walk across it? If so, you have underlay damage. Once the carpet has got to the stage of wrinkling it is usually too late to save it. It may be possible however, if the damage doesn’t appear too severe to replace the underlay and save the carpet. Always be sure to use a good quality underlay and be sure that spills are treated appropriately so that the underlay doesn’t remain wet.
Assessing the Stains
Not all stains are permanent – the grey markings that are commonly found in walkways and areas of high foot traffic can often be removed by professional carpet cleaning such as that offered by Sun Dry Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control. Fading by sun damage however is permanent as is orange and yellow stains caused by stain removal attempts which dye the carpet fibres. Another thing to consider is whether or not the stains that are there will be hidden by your furniture. If you are unsure, you can always call Sun Dry Carpet Cleaning & Pest Control to assess the carpet.
Worn Pile
If the pile is worn flat and seems thin underfoot then the damage is likely to be permanent. If the pile appears flattened but doesn’t seem thin or old, then it is possible to improve the appearance of the carpet through a professional carpet clean that includes grooming with a carpet rake.
Quality
Is the carpet good quality? The more dense the pile, generally the better quality it is. Try to determine if the carpet is made from wool, nylon, polypropylene or a combination. Generally speaking wool and nylon carpets are higher quality. Polypropylene carpets will wear easily and won’t last as long.
Does it Suit You?
Does the colour and the design of the carpet suit your style? If the carpet is a high quality one in good condition but just so happens to be a bright green shag, you may find that it doesn’t go with the rest of your furnishings and design elements. It’s best to replace it before you move in.
